Studies of De Leo et all have demonstrated such as oxidative stress (OS) can be one of casual factors of infertility. First of all, OS is, by definition, an imbalance between production of ROS (reactive oxygen species) and antioxidant defence system. It follows that oxidative stress plays an important role in almost all phases of human reproduction. In this regard ROS are involved for many aspect of reproductive functions like, for example, oocyte maturation, ovarian steroidogenesis, corpus luteum functions, as well as in the process of fertilization, embryo development and pregnancy, at last also in some diseases who bring about infertility.
For this reason PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) has been associated with the increased oxidative stress. Inositol is knwmn as a intracellular mediator of insulin, because of its main action take place via insulin sensitization. Few elements are known about possible effects on other disease like oxidative stress with PCOS. On the contrary results of their studies, suggest that in PCOS women there is an increase of the oxidation of thiol groups of proteins follicular connected to a progressive increase of the oxidative stress and then the administration of D-chiro-inositol in some patients seems to reduce oxidation of thial groups. The woman were treated with D-chiro-inositol (500mg x 2 per day) for 3 months before being subjected to cycles of IVF (in vitro fertilization). The level of oxidative stress was measured by marking of free thiol groups of proteins in the follicular fluid with 3-(N-Maleimidopropionyl)- biocytin.
At this point, a new mode to value and using inositol can suggest medical dotors a different way to offer a specific cure for PCOS patiens.
